SUMMARY:Second Life Building Community around Preservation and Adaptive Reuse in the California Desert
DESCRIPTION:5:00PM Refreshments\n5:30PM Presentation\n1 LU/HSW Pending\nThis event comprises a series of presentations followed by a panel discussion analyzing the impact of preservation and adaptive reuse projects in the California desert. These projects not only extend the lifespan of architecturally significant structures but also\, more significantly\, foster public commitment to preserving and celebrating the region’s modern built identity—a dedication that stands out prominently in the area. \nSpanning from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea\, the Golden State’s desert stands as a symbol of architectural pride. Region-wide events like Modernism Week attract hundreds of thousands of architecture and design enthusiasts annually\, contributing to the local fascination with the built environment. Nonprofits such as the Palm Springs Modern Committee\, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation\, Palm Desert Preservation Foundation\, and others play a crucial role in raising awareness about the region’s architectural significance and mobilizing both public and private sectors to preserve it. As grassroots organizations driven by ecological concerns rather than profit\, they actively oppose development plans that threaten social structures and environmental richness. \nTowns like Palm Springs and Palm Desert\, akin to Santa Barbara and Montecito\, boast strong architectural identities. Architects across these urban centers grapple with similar challenges: balancing the preservation of local character with evolving functional and aesthetic needs. Preservation efforts\, including adaptive reuse projects\, emerge from this balance\, offering insights for new construction in these historically rooted towns. \nThe proposed event aims to highlight preservation stories led by grassroots organizations in the California desert. These efforts\, by engaging the public\, have nurtured feelings of belonging\, optimism\, and pride in architecture\, which provide valuable insights for Santa Barbara’s architects and the broader public. \nRegister here. \n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSidney Williams\nFrom 1996 to 2016 Sidney Williams was director of education and public programs before becoming curator of architecture and design at the Palm Springs Art Museum. She was the founding curator of the Architecture and Design Center after an historic rehabilitation of a 1961 bank building… \nRead the rest of Sidney’s bio here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Secoy Jensen\, AIA\nSusan Secoy Jensen received her Bachelor of Architecture from Kent State University\, and her master’s degree in architecture and urban design from UCLA. She earned her professional license to practice architecture in 1991\, and formed Secoy Architects\, Inc. in 1996… \nRead the rest of Susan’s bio here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeo Marmol\, FAIA\nLeo Marmol\, FAIA\, is Managing Partner of the architect-led design-build practice Marmol Radziner\, founded in 1989 with Ron Radziner\, FAIA. Based in Los Angeles with offices in San Francisco and New York\, the firm is known for its innovative approach that includes architecture\, construction\, landscape\, interiors\, and furniture… \nRead the rest of Leo’s bio here.

SUMMARY:General Meeting: Retooling with Iterative Workflows for AI Driven Design
DESCRIPTION:5:30PM Arrive for drinks and mingling.\n6:15PM Dinner provided followed by the presentation. \n1 LU Pending\nSpeaker: Natalia Bakaeva \nOur third General Meeting will conclude this year’s theme of ‘Making & Meaning in the Age of AI.’ The goal of the meeting is to demonstrate a feedback-driven\, iterative approach to developing AI-enabled tools and workflows\, rooted in the specific needs of the architectural profession. We will explore the current landscape of AI-augmented architectural tools\, highlight case studies of successful workflows\, and offer practical insights for integrating these technologies into various aspects of the discipline. Attendees will gain hands-on techniques for leveraging AI in daily architectural practice\, from data management to image generation. \nKey Topics:\n· Current landscape of goal oriented architectural tools augmented with AI\n· Successful implementation of AI-enabled workflows that can be used right now\n· Integration of tools for feedback driven design\n· Highly impactful hands-on techniques for use in daily architectural practice \nAbout the General Meeting Speaker: \nNatalia Bakaeva is a registered architect OAA\, artist\, and placemaker passionate about creating physical forms that reflect diverse cultural influences. She has worked on residential\, commercial\, healthcare\, educational\, and public space art projects. Born and raised in the Far East of Russia\, her global journey includes Japan\, Spain\, Moscow\, London\, and Toronto\, where she resides. Natalia’s dedication to the sustainability of architectural practice and diverse background led her to co-found ARKI DIGITAL INC\, where she focuses on incorporating AI and smart technology into design workflows. ARKI leverages AI to address the issue of unused architectural data\, transforming past design expertise into a searchable data hub\, and enabling architects to monetize their existing knowledge. Her approach empowers architects to focus on creativity and efficiency\, enhancing economic and sustainability outcomes in the built environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to R & R Trust for contributing towards bringing Natalia to Santa Barbara.

SUMMARY:As-Built Surveying Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:1 LU\nAs-Built Surveying Best Practices is a comprehensive course that teaches architects how to create As-Built plans prior to beginning their design process. The class is intended to educate the attendee about both parts of the As-Built survey process – gathering the field measurements of the structure\, as well as using the data collected to draft or model the final plans needed by the architect. The first part of the course focuses on laser scanning\, which is quickly being adopted as the main form of field measuring because of its efficiency and accuracy. The second part of the course explains the second step in creating As-Built plans\, which is to document the existing conditions using the Point Cloud in AutoCAD 2D drafting software and/or various 3D Building Information Modeling software. When attendees complete the course\, they will understand the full process for creating As-Built plans using laser scanning as the main method for gathering field measurements.

SUMMARY:House Tour: Almost Off-Grid\, a Sustainable Ranch in Santa Ynez
DESCRIPTION:Address & directions will be sent prior to the tour  \n1 LU/HSW \nThe ranch is a rural collection of barns\, horse pastures\, and food production in a largely self-sufficient landscape powered by photovoltaics\, water sourced from an on-site well\, gardens composted with animal waste\, rain water harvested\, and all new landscape plantings being organic food crops. \nThe house completes the assemblage\, raised over the slightly sloping site. Three volumes have been placed under the continuous roof: a one-bedroom house\, a one-bedroom guest house\, and an upper level studio. Between and around the volumes are habitable terraces. The living space opens to 360-degree views of mountains and agricultural fields. The design is based on sustainable principles\, and as with the entire ranch\, the house is fully powered by the sun with all systems being electric. \nAttendees need to sign this waiver. Send back to info@aiasb.com. \nIf you are interested in ride sharing\, please contact info@aiasb.com.
