The AIA Santa Barbara Design Awards program recognizes design excellence in architecture, residential architecture, restoration/renovation, and urban design. Criteria used by the jury include quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.

On Thursday, December 8, 2016, the following 16 projects were awarded for exceptional design excellence.

Barbara Bestor, AIA
Principal Architect of Bestor Architecture
Executive director of the University’s Julius Shulman Institute

Barbara teaches architecture at Woodbury University in Burbank, California. She has developed a varied, creative and aesthetically progressive body of work over the last ten years propagating the concept that Architecture can and should be a part of all aspects of our creative community. Examples of her work include the Beats Electronics Headquarters in Culver City, the Nasty Gal Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Los Angeles, and the Toro Canyon House in Santa Barbara. In 2011, she was the recipient of the LA Restaurant Design Award from the American Institute of Architects for her design of the Pitfire Pizza in LA. She was also nominated for the James Beard Foundation Award for the same restaurant that year. The Floating Bungalow house in Venice, CA was featured in MOCA’s 2013 survey of contemporary Los Angeles architecture. Michael Imber, FAIA
Principal Architect of Michael G. Imber, Architects, PLLC

Michael G. Imber, Architects, PLLC is a modern classical design firm based in San Antonio, Texas and recognized for a body of work that is strong in historic sentiment, yet modern in its execution. Michael has been honored with numerous local and national design awards including the Texas Society of Architect’s William W. Caudill, FAIA Award; for his achievements as a young architect and for his contributions to the American Institute of Architects. In 2007, Michael was honored with the Arthur Ross Award for his enduring commitment to the classical tradition in residential architecture, civic buildings, and neighborhood design. In 2008, he was inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows for his contribution to American design. Most recently, he has won the 2010 and 2011 Palladio Awards for outstanding achievement in traditional design and designed the 2011 Southern Living House.

Sandra Stannard, Architect, LEED AP
Professor at the Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Sandra has taught architecture for twenty years (University of Idaho, University of Washington, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), including summer studios in Rome at the Sede di Roma/ Penn State. Sandy Stannard’s teaching and research revolves around issues of ecological sensitivity. She teaches advanced design studios at CalPoly, building technology coursework, and advises master’s theses. Professor Stannard is one of the faculty advisors for Cal Poly’s upcoming Solar Decathlon 2015 entry; she also served as an advisor for Cal Poly’s 2005 entry, which received third place overall in this U.S. DOE/NREL sponsored international design/build competition. She was also part of the Carbon Neutral Design (CND) project, a nationwide collaborative project sponsored by the Society of Building Science Educators and the American Institute of Architects. Professor Stannard was a recent recipient of a USGBC “Green Innovation”; honorable mention award for her work on an outdoor classroom for a local elementary school, a project intended to enhance environmental learning in an outdoor setting.
