On behalf of the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara, Robert Ooley, AIA, 2019 President, requests the pleasure of your company as we honor our members, our constituents and celebrate our community’s architectural heritage through the presentation of Design Awards. The purpose of the Design Awards is to recognize and honor excellence in architecture within our local built environment and by AIA Santa Barbara architects beyond our region.
We have submissions from licensed architects in the Santa Barbara area, also from architects outside Santa Barbara, if the project was in SB County. Honor, Merit, and Honorable Mentions may be recognized in the following categories: Commercial, Single Family Residential, Mixed-use and Multi-Family Residential, Historic Preservation, Restoration, Rehabilitation or Reconstruction, Santa Barbara Architectural Heritage, Small Projects: Single Family Residential Additions, Remodels or Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU’s,) Commercial Interiors, Residential Interiors and Proposed / Unbuilt Projects.
Also awarded at the Gala will be the Lutah Maria Riggs Community Award.
We will be offering student design awards.
Our jurors this year are Christopher Hawthorne, Chief Design Officer of the City of Los Angeles, John Margolis, AIA of Appleton Partners, and Margot McDonald professor at CalPoly and Architecture Department Head. We have invited the jurors to attend the Gala, and comment on the 24 winning projects.
The 2020 incoming Officers and Board of Directors will be announced at the Gala.
Starting at 5.30 pm with a no-host bar, followed by a Design Awards program with dinner, and dessert provided.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of AIA Santa Barbara: ticket prices are in celebration of this anniversary.

AIA Santa Barbara’s Awards reflect the values and aspirations of our region’s design community while focusing on larger, even global issues. We recognize that our members work on a variety of challenges and scales. Submissions should reflect a strong sense of place, history, or purpose. We value artfully resolved design, but also celebrate the fact that architecture is much more than just beautiful buildings.
