Fire Marshal/Battalion Chief, Aaron Briner and Assistant Fire Marshal, Alex Broumand of The Montecito Fire Department and, Division Chief, Steve Oaks of The Santa Barbara County Fire Department, will provide a theoretical and practical look at what shapes their department’s fire regulations, how this regulation is reviewed and altered, and some unique ways it is implemented. Examples of alternative use of materials and methods in construction, unique code interpretations, and the intent behind fire regulation will be reviewed and presented. Also, a visual presentation of the importance of the site and building access for first-responders will be shared. Whether it is part of natural disaster response or a daily emergency call the built environment plays a critical role in the life and safety of our community and first respondents.
Learning Objectives:
-Understand how the fire code is reviewed and developed.
-Understand the intent of some of the fire code and standards.
-Learn about Alternative use of Fire Department approved materials and methods.
-Agency limitations when reviewing code intent.
-Understand ways that fire access functions … and in some cases don’t function properly.
