The AIA Santa Barbara Design Awards program recognizes design excellence in architecture, residential architecture, restoration/renovation, and urban design. Criteria to be used by the jury include quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.

On Friday, December 7, 2018, the jury selected the following 15 projects, for exceptional design excellence.

This year’s AIA Santa Barbara Design Awards jury included architects Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, Takashi Yanai, FAIA, and Douglas Ewing, FAIA, NCARB, WBFF.

About the 2018 AIASB Design Awards Jury

Takashi Yanai,FAIA

Takashi Yanai is a Partner at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects and has been Residential Studio Director since 2004. Takashi is currently spearheading the launch of EYRC’s San Francisco office and continues to lead that office as the design director. Today his work is rooted in its contemplative relationship to landscape and is a continuation of the California Modernist ethos infused with reinterpretations of traditional Japanese elements. Takashi serves on the SFMOMA Photography Accessions Committee and has also been appointed the Chair-elect of the National AIA Committee on Design for 2020.

Milford Wayne Donaldson

Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA

Mr. Donaldson is president of award winning Architect Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, Inc. since 1978, specializing in historic preservation services. Mr. Donaldson served as the California State Historic Preservation Officer from 2004-2012. In 2010 Mr. Donaldson was appointed Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by President Obama.

He is an architect of innovative design in preservation architecture, including the American Institute of Architects induction into the College of Fellows in 1992, the California Council, American Institute of Architects Award of Excellence in Historic Preservation Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Preservation Foundation.

Mr. Donaldson’s projects in Santa Barbara include the 2003 AIASB award winner of the restoration of the Santa Barbara Railroad Station, reconstruction of the Santa Barbara Presidio State Historic Park, restoration of Casa de la Guerra, the Lobrero Theatre, the Orena Adobe, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation Offices, and the Santa Barbara Mission Lavenaria.

Douglas Ewing, FAIA, NCARB, WBFF

Douglas Ewing has served as Director of the AIA, AIA Awards juror, State Examiner for the California Architects Licensing Oral Exams, City Planning Commissioner, City Design Review Board member and lectured at various schools, AIA events and architectural tours of his projects. He is also a member of the National AIA Committee on Design. With a lifelong respect for the environment and love of craft, Ewing demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable design practices in all of his projects. Over the years, Ewing has given his time to various community groups, providing pro bono work for the Boy Scouts, a local City Youth Center, the local AIA Chapter and for Romberger Guild Group Home in South Pasadena.

Lutah Maria Riggs Award

In light of the tragic events of the Thomas Fire and resulting debris flow the Lutah Maria Riggs President Award is being conveyed this year for outstanding community service. In doing so AIA Santa Barbara recognizes the community’s extensive response to assist those effected by this unprecedented disaster. The American Institute of Architects, Santa Barbara is proud to have selected Carl Palmer, whose leadership, compassion and dedication have contributed significantly to community healing and recovery in the wake of the catastrophe. Carl is the founder of LegacyWorks Group and has led innovative community impact initiatives for the past 17 years. The Lutah Maria Riggs awardwas presented by the American RivieraBank.

For the first time AIA Santa Barbara awarded student design awards to architectural drafting and design students at SB City College for their classroom project designing Accessory Dwelling Units.

2018 AIA Design Awards exhibition

Submissions of the 2018 Design Awards will be exhibited at Faulkner Gallery, during February and March 2019. First Thursday Reception will be held on February 7, 2019.
