Overview

This is a 4-part lunch-time series focused on the 2019 Title 24 Energy Code and cost-effective, high-performance construction. Each 1-hour event will include time for Q&A, a brief update on 3C-REN and a schedule of upcoming training. Lunch included.

  • Residential Retrofits – 2019 Title 24 and best practices for high performance

Working through specific examples, we’ll help project teams navigate Title 24 2019 Energy Standards and identify strategies that have the highest impact for improving energy efficiency, comfort and indoor healthy environments in retrofits. Earns 1 LU/ HSW. Learning objectives:

  • Understand the major changes in the Residential Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards 2019 (taking effect January 1, 2020).
  • Review the benefits and requirements of HERS measures and field verification
  • Identify best practices and highest impacts for retrofits
  • Discuss barriers and opportunities in managing a success high-performance retrofit.

  • Commissioning for Non-Residential Projects

Building commissioning (Cx) is a verification process to ensure non-residential buildings perform and operate as intended, and it’s required for any project over 10,000 SF. Rather than seeing Cx as one more burden, we’ll talk about efficiently meeting the requirements and enjoying the short-term and long-term benefits. Earns 1 LU/ HSW. Learning objectives:

  • Understand commissioning in Title 24 Energy Code and CAL Green
  • Review Cx Documents and schedule
  • Be able to communicate the benefits of the Cx process, including stories from the field
  • Understand additional options including enhanced commissioning, envelope commissioning, and monitoring

Key Presenters

  • Jennifer Rennick, AIA, Certified Energy Analyst

Jennifer specializes in energy use optimization, including passive solar design, whole-building energy use, zero net energy, and energy modeling and analysis. Through her careful analysis of all energy-related components, she consistently helps her clients achieve high energy efficiency, increased occupant comfort, and lower utility costs. A graduate from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Jennifer passionately shares her knowledge and expertise through presentations, workshops, and award-winning articles.

  • Mike Horgan, Passive House, and Zero Net Energy Builder

Mike is a licensed builder in both California and Massachusetts, as well as a certified Passive House Consultant. Mike has worked in the construction field for more than 25 years having begun framing homes at the age of 17. For 13 years he owned and operated his own design-build firm on Cape Cod specializing in energy-efficient new construction and renovations, and he has many zero-energy builds to his name. Mike specializes in bringing building practices, methods, and theories to real-life applications for architects, designers, and other builders. He focuses on life-cycle cost analysis of materials and applications; waterproofing, airtightness, vapor and insulation detailing; and the construct-ability of assemblies as cohesive packages. He is a graduate of Worcester University in MA with degrees in Economics and Finance, and Boston University with post-graduate degrees in Education and Linguistics.
