The AIA Santa Barbara Design Awards program recognizes design excellence in architecture, residential architecture, restoration/renovation, and urban design. Criteria to be used by the jury include quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.
On Thursday, December 03, 2015 the jury reviewed more than 90 projects, selecting the following 10 for exceptional design excellence.

Joan Soranno, FAIA
Design Principal, HGA Minneapolis Office
Joan is an award-winning architect specializing in museums and cultural institutions. Her passion for architecture is evident in her work style. With colleague John Cook as project architect, she has created a small design studio within the large-firm structure of HGA. Among her highly regarded work is Lakewood Garden Mausoleum in Minneapolis, which has won 22 national and international design awards and was featured on the cover of Architect magazine in October 2012.More info here, including work she has done.
Heidi Gibson AIA, LEED NC
Architect and Owner of Studio 2G Architects, LLP
In addition to owning her own firm for ten years, Heidi is a past President of the AIA Central Coast Chapter in San Luis Obispo. She received her Associates of Arts Degree from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles before earning her Bachelor of Architecture Degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Some of her many notable works include the Shale Oak Winery, Native Restaurant and Bar, and the Orcutt Union Plaza.
Tom Jones, AIA
Professor at the Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design
Tom has previously served as Dean of the college and is currently heading up the San Francisco Urban Program. A graduate of Cornell University, his career includes 41 years of private, non-profit, and governmental practice in architecture, planning, non-profit housing development, land use policy, and public education. Tom’s architecture, planning, and public education efforts have garnered numerous project and leadership awards from the AIA, American Planning Association, HUD, National Endowment for the Arts, Progressive Architecture, Architectural Record, and others.
