Membership in the AIA is an investment in your future that extends your network to fellow professionals at the national, state and local levels. Once you determine your eligibility in the appropriate membership category below, you can become an AIA member in one of three ways: (1) online from the National AIA website; (2) complete the paper application for your membership category, or (3) contact us at your local chapter.

Since 1857, the AIA has represented the professional interests of America’s architects. As AIA members, more than 86,000 licensed architects express their commitment to excellence in design and livability in our nation’s buildings and communities. Members adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct that assures the client, the public, and dedication to the highest standards in professional practice.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Complete both sides of the application and return the original. Please be sure to sign and date the application.
  2. Licensed Architects are required to submit a copy of their current registration/license.
  3. A check payable to AIA (this covers your National, State, and Local AIA dues from now through December 31st) or MasterCard, VISA, or American Express billing information for the amount. Dues are pro-rated. See application for current amount due.

Making the Most of your Membership

Architect Member (AIA)

Must be a licensed architect in the United States. A copy of the applicant’s license must be presented at the time of application. Architect members may use the designation “AIA” after their name and are required to earn 18 learning units per year to maintain their membership.

New Graduate Associate Member (Assoc. AIA)

Free Associate AIA membership for up to 1.5 years after graduation. Now open to graduates of non-NAAB programs who meet certain criteria.

  • Currently work under the supervision of an architect in a professional or technical capacity directly related to the practice of architecture, and
  • Recently graduated with a non-NAAB Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree within approximately the past 1-18 months
    OR
  • Currently work under the supervision of an architect in a professional or technical capacity directly related to the practice of architecture, and
  • Currently enrolled or participating in circumstances recognized by licensing authorities as constituting credit towards architectural licensure

Associate Member (Assoc. AIA)

An Associate AIA member and may use the title “Associate AIA” after their name. An Associate is unlicensed to practice architecture in the United States, but meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Recent graduate with a degree in architecture, or
  • Currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working towards licensure, or
  • Currently work under the supervision of an architect or hold a degree in architecture, or
  • Faculty member in a university program in architecture.

International Associate Architect Member (Int'l Assoc. AIA)

These members are licensed to practice architecture in another country, and not licensed in the United States. Please provide a copy of your architecture license(s) when you apply for this membership category.

Allied Affiliate Member

Open to individuals working in professions affiliated with the field of architecture such as construction, engineering, law, interior design, marketing and others. Licensed architects are not eligible for Allied Affiliate membership. Provides local affiliation only (you will not receive national mailings).

Emeritus Membership Elevation Form

Applies to an emeritus membership elevation (for architects, associates).
